I need a Mac compatible HD video camera and somewhat cheap editing software?

19 Aug

I’ve been looking around (with not too much luck) to find a pretty nice HD camcorder and video editing software for the Mac. I’m trying to find the camera for under $400, and the software nothing too fancy but I’d like green-screen compatibility. Anyone have any tips? It would mean a lot!

Does anyone own a KODAK Zi6 HD DIGITAL POCKET VIDEO CAMERA CAMCORDER or something resembling it?

10 Jul

…because I want to know if the batteries will run out after using it with a 32 GB card. Or is there anyone that can tell me if this camcorder will run for 8 -12+ hours on the battery’s provided without running out of power, or can I hook it up (plug it in) to my computer or wall socket to do this?
Any suggestions for an inexpensive camcorder that with do this will be appreciated. Thank you.

Another question: Do I have to hold the back center button to video tape or side button or anything? The reason I am asking this is because I want to know if I can set this up on a counter and run it (for hours) without any contact with it or any buttons.
Mandy:
I really like you! Thank you for your helpful and informative answer!

Can my camera do time lapse photography?

02 Jul

I have 2 cameras and a camcorder.

-Canon Digital Rebel XT
-Canon Powershot A590IS
-Sony CCD-TRV108 NTSC video Hi8 camcorder

Can any of these do time lapse? I’ve tried looking in the manuals, but have found nothing. Also, instructions on how to do time lapse. This is my first time attempting time-lapse so any answers will help!

What type of video camera do I need to upload video clips to my computer?

09 Jun

Do I need a digital camcorder or a digital camera with video? I know digital camers use memory cards, is it the same for digital camcorders? Does it matter? Seems like everyone, except me, can upload video clips.

What is a good small HD camera / camcorder to use at Loud rock shows that won’t distort sound or video quality?

07 Jun

I want a small camera to use at rock concerts that wont have horrible sound quality. I was considering the Flip HD, but not sure. HD would be prefered, but as long as the sound is good and not over clouded by bass.

should i get a digital camera or a digital camcorder?

07 Jun

its just a simple poll to ask people what i should get. i wanna know what others would find cool. i was thinking either a digital camera for around 200 dollars or one of those flip digital camcorders you see on tv so much. i just want some personal opinions. so the question is flip camcorder or digital camera. the flip would be perfect but it doesnt take still photos. buy anyway. just wanted some opinions cause im having trouble deciding, thanks. ill give you 5 stars for the one i decide to pick, thanks

Digital Camera Advice Much Needed?

05 Jun

I need some advice on choosing my next digital camera. Right now I own a Sony point and shoot, and while it takes good pictures, down the road after I move I’m ready to upgrade to something better, especially since I have a nice powerful MacBook Pro that’s capable of doing more.

I’m also realizing that I may not be able to get one device that “does all”. I may have to purchase a combination of devices to get exactly what I need. Below I will post my needs, as well as the choices of camera types I’m looking at (although I’m not sure about model numbers AT ALL. ANY help would be MUCH APPRECIATED!).

My photography needs are as follows: I need something that will take excellent photography, especially in terms of scenery. I want a camera with excellent picture quality. I also need something that shoots HD video. Not sure if I can get this in a camera or if I should invest in a separate video camera for this feature. RAW shooting would be a nice plus, but it wouldn’t be required if I can find one that shoots in JPEG at as good of quality. I’d like something smaller and lighter so it’d be easy to carry, but if quality would be better, than I’d settle for bigger (like a DSLR. I could even go a combo route and get both a point and shoot and DSLR). Removable lenses is something that would be nice, but again, not required. I’d also like to be able to geotag my shots, and this could be done either in camera or with a separate card that does the geotagging. I wouldn’t care either way how it works.
Here’s what I have to choose from. I would like to know which one (or combination of these) would be ideal for me. As for brands I’m considering Nikon on a digital camera, and if I went with a video camera probably a Panasonic since Apple and Macworld have given them good ratings. DEFINITELY NOT SONY:

Compact Point and Shoot (similar to what I have now, only more updated with all the new features)

Advanced Point and Shoot (larger, probably higher quality pictures, just without the manual controls of a DSLR, some offer RAW)

DSLR (larger, manual controls, high picture quality, removable lenses, RAW shooting, not compact)

If I needed a video camera, here are my choices:

HD Camcorder-Tapeless/AVCHD (I would need something that’s not too large so that I could take it on trips. I want tapeless since it’s becoming the new standard and it’s easier to manage, AVCHD format since my Mac handles it well, definitely shooting in full HD)

HD Camcorder-Flip Mini Style (the small, compact, flip mini-style camcorders. They shoot in full HD, but I’m just not sure if they’d do the job for weather reports or not)

Now onto software. Currently I use iLife ‘09 for my photo/video editing on my Mac. iPhoto and iMovie are great for cataloging and editing my photos and videos, but I probably could use a little more. Here’s my choices in photo/video software. Any I purchase would be the Mac version. Any suggestions here would be appreciated.

Photo Editors:
Photoshop Elements (good for editing point and shoot and non-RAW photos)

Photoshop CS Extended (the advanced version of Photoshop for Mac. I’d get a deep student discount)

Adobe Lightroom (another pro photo editor from Adobe. It’s had good reviews)

Aperture (Apple’s pro photo editor. It’s had excellent reviews. Not sure if I would need that alone or combined with an Adobe package)

Video Editors:

Final Cut Express (pro video editor, step up from iMovie, not sure if its worth it or if I should save my money for a student license for Final Cut Studio, WHICH IS PRICEY)

Adobe Premier (Adobe’s video editor)

Any help, advice, or suggestions would be much appreciated!

MiniDV Camcorder vs. Canon Digital Camera Video Capture?

05 Jun

So recently, I had been doing a project with my friend’s two digital camcorders that are Canon brand. They are MiniDV camcorders (one cost $1200 and the other $2500). I am not sure exactly what the model number is. At the same time, I was playing around with my Canon Powershot A710IS’s video capture function. After I transfered the footage captured on the two MiniDVs, I compared the quality to that of the footage recorded on my Powershot and the Powershot’s footage actually seemed crisper, brighter, and cleaner. On the other hand, the MiniDVs seemed grainy and kind of dim. All of the footage was in AVI format. Is it possible that a digital camera’s video quality is actually better than MiniDV? (Given: my friend’s camcorders are a couple years old but they work perfectly fine.)

Camcorders why can’t the optical zoom be high the more megapixels your still camera has?

04 Jun

I’m shopping for a camcorder/camera. Specifically a hybrid SD/HDD. I want a high optical zoom with a high megapixel resolution for the still camera. There doesn’t seem to be one in the consumer market. Why is this? Is it something technical with the way the camera functions?
