Is it easy to get a video from a mini-dv to my computer?

11 Apr

I know that unlike mini-dvd’s, hard drives, and flash memory camcorders, mini-dv camcorders record to tape and use a compression other than mp3. However, I previously learned that the video quality is much better. So, how do you get the mini-dv video to save to your computer as an mp3? Do you press play on the camcorder and then it sends the video to your computer via usb or firewire? If that is how you do it, does the camcorder automatically convert it to an MP3 or do you then have to take an additional step of converting the video file to an MP3?

Don’t mean to sound stupid but I really have no idea how this works despite being fairly computer savy.

Thanks for the help.

Is there any easy way to edit footage from a HDD camcorder on a Mac?

21 Mar

I had a nightmare experience a few weeks ago trying to edit and publish footage taken with a JVC Everio (Not my camera). It imported as .MOD, which wouldn’t open in any program. I tried changing the file extension to .MP2, which showed me video, but no audio. I then tried MPEG Streamclip to convert it to .MPG, but still no audio. I ended up having to rerecord the movie with my MiniDV camcorder.
I’m looking to upgrade to an HD camera, but I’ve been limiting myself to MiniDV camcorders. I’m almost set on the Canon HV30, but I’ve heard complaints of motor noise. I need to know if I can use a Hard Drive camera to abolish this problem.

Video Scriptwriting: Making it Easy

20 Oct

The script is the heart of your video production. So what makes a good video script?

Concise, conversational and easy-to-read.

Video script writing is the exact opposite from technical writing or academic writing. Those forms of writing use complex sentences, ten-dollar words and are usually very wordy. That is NOT what you want with a video script.

First, keep in mind that a video script is meant to be read aloud. Viewers will HEAR it rather than READ it. Therein lies the major difference. It’s called writing for the ear instead of writing for the eye.

On a practical level, it is also writing for your narrator. No narrator, not even the really good ones, can sound good stumbling through endless tongue twisters. Convoluted, run-on sentences are not only a nightmare to read; they are also hard for the audience to understand even if the narrator does manage to spit it out.

So forget everything you learned from those stodgy English teachers. (My best friend is an English teacher; that is not a criticism.) It’s ok for video scripts to be full of sentence fragments because that is how people actually talk. If it makes sense when heard, then that is what you want. Just try reading an academic paper out loud. It would sound terrible and put everybody to sleep.

Which brings me to a very important point. The single best way to evaluate a video script is to read it aloud.  Reading it out loud will make any error stick out like a sore thumb.

If possible, have someone listen to you as you read and see how well they understand what you are saying.    Do not worry about using short, choppy sentences if that is what SOUNDS good. Inflection, tone of voice and pacing will have a lot to do with how well the script is understood and those things do not come through on paper.

Back when I taught TV production, I told my high school students to pretend they were speaking to a friend. If you wanted to tell a friend this story, what would you say? Write that down. Then, go back and modify it. Cut out the fat. Make sure the meat is prominent. Make sure the words you have chosen are descriptive, colorful, yet easily pronounced and understood.

Good writing is usually a process of rewriting. No one writes a masterpiece on their first draft. The first draft is just a starting point. Go back over it, multiple times if necessary, and make changes as you go.

Taking this approach actually makes writing easier because it takes the pressure off. If you are sitting there starring at a blank screen, thinking you have to come up with something elegant and brilliant, chances are your brain will lock up. If, on the other hand, you know you are going to improve it later, you will feel comfortable just getting down the gist of what you want to say.

Video script writing is a style unto itself. Remember too that whatever video images you use also convey meaning. Ideally, the video and the spoken narration work in tandem. So if your narrator say, “Political leaders spoke to the public,” and you show a hot air balloon deflating, then you have added considerable meaning without relying on words. That’s one of the things that makes video production so much fun! I shouldn’t make so much fun of politicians. On second thought, yes I should!

Thanks for reading.

Make Money Easy with Your Own DVD!

09 Oct

Making and marketing your own DVD. Does that sound like a viable business? Well, let us see… You shoot some video tape and have it transferred to a blank DVD. Just a few bucks spent for a one time expense. From there you can have the DVD duplicated with four-color printing on it and have it in four-color printed packaging which makes it look very professional for just a couple dollars each, but that’s just if you want to be fancy about it by using photographs. Otherwise, two-color printing will work just fine.

Now your DVDs are ready to sell. From just over a dollar’s worth cost for production when you use two-color printing, you can mark up your product as you see fit. Charge $97.00 or $149.00 a copy, over and over again. Or produce a set of DVD’s and charge $495.00! Does not take much math skills to figure why people are becoming rich doing this!

The way to make a valuable DVD is to have it show and tell how to do something people want to do, or how to have something people want to have. You can come up with some ideas if you reach into your experience of things you have learned or discovered how to do.

This is the information age and if you put out the information, people are going to buy it up because they are hungry to know everything. Truth is that if you are currently selling printed how-to material, you can command a much higher price to provide that information in DVD format. Sell them your knowledge on a DVD.

Of course you will need some equipment to make your DVD. You can be up and running without a big budget. A tripod holding a digital camcorder than can connect directly to your computer so that you can use video editing software and a good microphone so you can be heard clearly is what it comes down to.

Having a remote control on your camcorder could even make video editing unnecessary, since what really counts in DVDs is the information contained in the DVD and not how pretty the presentation is. What really makes winners is down and dirty content.

A good place to get content from which to produce a DVD that you can call your own is InfoGround. In fact there is so much there covering the most popular niche markets that you can give yourself the reputation of being an expert! InfoGoRound has hundreds of top quality, private label articles for the taking!

Converting some of the many information products found at InfoGoRound to DVD is the fast track to being a ‘how-to’ author able to effortlessly bring in the easy money. You will have so much content to work with that you should even use some of the video you make to put up on a website. Showing free video samples on your website is sure to drive traffic and skyrocket DVD sales.

Are you ready to do this and join the ranks of the Millionaire Internet Marketers? There are a couple of those marketers who amazingly enough have separate website videos in the same spacious white room with huge decorative windows. Assuming they don’t live in the same mansion, you might think they are filming in the same studio. If you think that then you would be wrong.

You can make your video look like it was done at a beautiful gorgeous place no matter what the surroundings you currently have. To set up your own amazing studio, get some florescent lights as they provide lighting without much extra heat or shadows, and set up a screen for your background. Put a light on each side of the camera pointing toward the screen. You will want to experiment in order to get the lights placed just right.

Now you have a clutter free background by using a screen, which could just be a sheet or curtain placed up. The secret to having any type of background you want however, is to invest in a chroma key green or blue screen. Also get and learn how to use video editing software that has chroma key effect. What chroma key effect does is replace the colored background with any type of background you want… even an image of the inside of a mansion! It is definitely the way to make a great impression.

Information DVDs are perfect products to develop. You can build your whole business around them. They are inexpensive to make, yet have a high-perceived value. They are heavily in demand, and staggeringly easy to sell for big fat wallet-filling profits. Film yourself on DVDs sharing what you know or make a presentation from the treasure-trove of information found at InfoGoRound. The money you can generate from doing this is outrageous!

5 Easy Ways to Use Video to Attract More Clients

07 Oct

As a former NBC television producer I would like to share with you some easy ways to add video to your website or email newsletter. But don’t worry you don’t need experience in a television station control room. Thanks to the YouTube and other video sharing websites adding video to your website is a lot easier than you think.

1) Create a Photo Montage- Do you have photos of your products, workshops, clients, or yourself? Then you can easily create a video for your website. If you are using Windows XP you already have the tool to do this without buying any additional software. Windows Movie Maker has drag and drop features to make creating and editing your movie easier. It allows you to import photos and create a photo montage with background music and fancy video transitions. You can then use this same tool to upload your video to a video sharing website. Don’t worry MAC users, newer MACs come with a video editing tool called IMovie. But if you don’t have this software already it is available to purchase.

2) Video Testimonials- If you work with your clients one on one or provide workshops, why not collect video testimonials from them. All you need is a simple video camera and tripod and you’re ready to go. You don’t need a special microphone or videographer, because the camera microphone will do just fine. But if you would feel more comfortable you could hire an aspiring movie director from your local community college. Your clients will love being on camera and feel honored you asked them. Then use the same video editing software to get just the right clips and upload them to your website or youtube. New clients will be so impressed!

3) Webcam video of you- Do you have a webcam? If not they cost around $50 and are very easy to use. You can use your webcam to record a special video message discussing your free newsletter and the upload the video to your website. I recommend a service called Instant Video Generator that makes this whole process so easy.

4) Video clip of a recent media interview- Were you recently interviewed on television? If so as long as you receive permission you can display this video clip on your website. If you can’t use the clip directly on your website you can always link to their website, but be careful to check the link frequently to make sure that it is still active. Having a video clip from a media outlet gives you instant credibility with potential clients.

5) Video of your product in action- Website visitors thinking about purchasing a product love to see how it works or people using it. Create a home movie of your product in action. For example, if you’re a wedding planner what about a home movie clip of your latest wedding? Or if you sell purses you could create a video of people wearing your purses.

Now before adding any audio/visual elements to your website please keep in mind these tips. Don’t overwhelm your website visitor. Limit you’re elements to one or two per page and only use only one element that plays automatically. Also, you don’t need the most expensive camera, microphone, editing software, or webcamera to get started. Below are my top recommendations for the technology you will need to get started.

Are Mini Dvd Camcorders Good For Filming Skateboarders, And Easy To Edit?

14 Sep

im planning on buying the Panasonic Palmcorder VDR-D230 MiniDVD Camcorder. and buying a 37mm fisheye. i was wondering if this Camera Would be a good choice of camcorder for fliming some skateboarding and if the clips filmed would be easy to edit.

Camcorder Formats Made Easy

08 Sep

MiniDV: Since its launch in 1966 miniDV has become the standard format for consumer and semi-professional camcorder users and is still the standard that other formats are judged by. The tape format produces the best picture quality and PCM stereo sound of CD quality and can record 60 minutes at the best quality.

MiniDV camcorders use tapes roughly the same size as a box of matches. This has enabled camcorder manufacturers, over the years, to reduce the size of the camcorders to their present ‘pocket size’.

Recorded footage can be transferred from the miniDV camcorders by one of three different ways. Firstly as an composite analogue signal using composite AV leads, secondly as an S-video analogue signal and finally as a DV signal.

The DV signal is transferred using the DV-out port also known as a Firewire port, or IEEE1394 and also as i.Link and connected to your computer by a Firewire cable. When transferring your footage by this method there is no loss of quality in the picture and audio and this is what makes this format so popular.

Almost all miniDV camcorders have a DV-out port and better quality ones will have a DV-in port for transferring edited footage back to your camcorder. Although other formats are gaining in popularity miniDV still has plenty of life ahead of it yet and the camcorders are good value for money.

DVD: DVD is increasing in popularity and claiming a bigger slice of the market since its introduction in mid 2001. The main advantage of DVD camcorders is convenience. Record your footage to the disc, remove it and play it in your DVD player without the need for cables or connections.

DVD camcorders use 8cm discs in a variety of recordable formats. DVD-R is a single use disc, compatible with all DVD players and used by all camcorder manufacturers. DVD-RAM is a rewritable disc that offers in camera editing and supported by Hitachi and Panasonic. DVD-/+RW is another rewriteable format and is supported by Sony.

Originally there were disc compatibility issues with DVD players but most DVD players will now play a variety of discs and some camcorders offer multi format capability making them more flexible.

DVD camcorder performance has improved tremendously since its introduction but still has disadvantages. Discs can only record 18 minutes of best quality video and editing is not as easy as miniDV but for easy of use DVD format is a fine choice.

HDD: Hard disk drive is the latest format to be used in camcorders. Originally introduced by JVC but now promoted by other manufacturers. Hard drives are currently as large as 30GB and can store 35 hours in standard recording mode and up to seven hours in best quality mode.

HDD camcorders are yet to match the quality of miniDV camcorders but their performance is still impressive and no doubt will get better still. With virtually no moving parts HDD camcorders are very compact and could well replace miniDV as the main format.

One obvious failing with HDD camcorders is once the hard disk is full the footage must be downloaded or over written. This may not be a big problem unless you are on vacation for some time and away from your computer.

Memory Card: Camcorder manufacturers have been providing a digital stills function with their camcorders for some time now. The stills are recorded on a memory card of one sort or another which fit into a card slot in the camcorder. Cameras are now being offered that record video footage to memory cards

Memory cards are normally only 1GB so quickly fill up even though the video is stored in highly compressed MPEG4 format. A good supply of cards are required for any long recording. However this format is convenient for posting to the internet or sending via email. Due to the compression the picture quality is inferior to other formats.

As the video is stored to card or memory stick the memory card camcorders are generally the smallest type on the market and are suitable as a pocket camcorder. Ongoing developement has already lead to MPEG2 video format as used by DVD and HDD camcorders. The SDHC card has recently been developed offering sizes up to 32MB.
